Emergence of the Boy Band
Founded in 1984 in Boston, Massachusetts, New Kids on the Block (NKOTB) was one of the first American boy bands to take the stage. They quickly rose to fame stealing the hearts of many around the world. Original members included Mark and Donnie Wahlberg, Jordan and Jonathan Knight, and Danny Wood. However, Mark left the group in 1985 and was replaced by Joey McIntyre who still performs with the band today. Early on the band caught the attention of Maurice Starr who guided them to their first recording contract with Columbia Records. In 1986 the band released their debut album, written and produced by Starr. It did not perform as well as the band was hoping, even with them traveling around the New England area to perform it still failed to gain main stream attention. In the spring of 1988 the band released the first single off their second album entitled Please Don’t Go Girl. With very low expectations set for this album, Columbia Records almost dropped the band. It was not until a radio station in Florida started playing the song every day that the band started getting national attention. With this new-found attention, a music video was produced for the song and spread around the country to show the visual appeal of the band. Not long after the band had made the charts, establishing Don’t Go Girl as their first major hit. NKOTB went on their first tour as the opening act for fellow American pop-icon Tiffany. By the time the tour was about to enter its second year the roles were reversed, and Tiffany was the opening act for NKOTB due to their intensely new popularity. Throughout the late 80’s an early 90’s the band had seen some of their best years. They had become one of the most popular performing groups in the country and they were estimated to be some of the highest paid performers surpassing the likes of Michael Jackson and Madonna.
In 1992 the band was hit with accusations that they were lip syncing during their live performances. Although this was later proven to not be true it did negatively impact the band and their reputation. They were no longer one of the top performers in the country and they were experiencing a lot of backlash. Their sales began to drop at an alarming rate because music tastes were beginning to change, and the band was not following that shift. Upon the release of their fourth album it became evident to the band that they were not as popular as they once were. They did not break the top 50 on the Billboard charts, and they were performing in clubs and theaters compared to their sold-out arenas and stadiums from prior tours. In 2004 Jonathan Knight left the band due to personal reasons, which initiated the whole band to dissemble.
NKOTB Reunion
In April of 2008 it was announced that the band was back together, and new music would be coming soon. Since the announcement of the band being back together they have created several new albums and toured with artists such as 98 Degrees, Boyz II Men and Paula Abdul. In October 2018 NKOTB announced that they would be touring in the new year alongside other 90’s superstars such as; Salt-N-Pepa, Naughty by Nature, Debbie Gibson and Tiffany. Mixtape 2022 Tour
New Kids on the Block came back in 2022 for a large arena tour through the country. Special guests, Salt-N-Pepa, Rick Ashley and En Vogue joined the famous boy band on stage in 2022. After a successful 2019 tour, the band was excited to get back on stage and perform in front of all their fans again. The massive tour started in May and continued through the summer. The city of Cincinnati kicked off the tour and from there the group went to New Orleans, Dallas, Los Angeles, Salt Lake City and more top cities. The last show was in DC, after many performances on the East coast. New Kids on the Block 2022 tickets are available before the tour kicks off. Secure tickets now!
