Off to a Rocky Start
The team had a long history before establishing in New Jersey. Starting out they were known as the Kansas City Scouts from 1974 to 1976, and then the Colorado Rockies from 1976 to 1982. When the team was originally in Kansas City, they saw very little success in performance and attendance. After only two years of being in the city the NHL removed the team and placed then in Colorado in hopes of attracting more fans to the team. In 1978 after a couple of rough seasons in Denver, the team clinched their first ever playoff berth, only to be eliminated by the Philadelphia Flyers in the first round. Eventually the team moved to Newark, New Jersey after they were sold off to American businessman John McMullen in 1982. In the summer of 1982, the team was officially renamed the New Jersey Devils, after the legend of the creature the Jersey Devil. For their first 25 seasons they were based at the Meadowlands Sports Complex and the Brendan Byrne Arena however, the team now hosts home games at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey.
New Found Footing
After a few rough seasons in their new home of New Jersey, the Devils began to see rapid success after new manager Lou Lamoriello began running the team in 1987. Under his leadership the team had their first ever wining record since they had become the Devils franchise, and they even qualified for their first ever playoff appearance as the Devils in 1988, only to be eliminated by the Boston Bruins in the Conference Finals. For the next several years the Devils failed to produce anything during the post season, resulting in several coaching changes along the way. The 1993-1994 season proved to be a turning point for the New Jersey Devils as they had acquired rookie goal tender Martin Brodeur, who helped lead the team to the Eastern Conference Finals game seven against the New York Rangers. Despite falling just short in 1994, the New Jersey Devils won their first Stanley Cup against the Detroit Red Wings in 1995. Since then, the Devils have won a total of three Stanley Cups and nine division championships. More recently the Devils have had their fair share of ups and downs, but today with an all-star lineup consisting of Taylor Hall, P.K. Subban, Wayne Simmonds, and Jack Hughes fans are eager to see how the Devils are going to perform on the ice this upcoming season!
New Jersey Devils vs New York Rangers
One of the biggest rivals that the Devils face off with are the New York Rangers. The two play in arenas that are less than ten miles apart, with only the Hudson river separating them. What has become known as the “Battle of the Hudson River” is one of the most intense rivalries in the league. Not only do the two play each other regularly throughout the regular season, but they have also faced off in the playoffs countless times. With fans from both sides willing to travel the short distance to the other arena, games between the two are nothing short of entertaining!
New Jersey Devils vs Philadelphia Flyers
Known by many as the “Battle of the Turnpikes” the rivalry between the New Jersey Devils and the Philadelphia Flyers has dated back to when the Devils first arrived in Newark. The two cities are so close to each other geographically with only the New Jersey Turnpike and the Pennsylvania Turnpike separating the two. For a period, both of these teams were the dominating force in the Atlantic Division accounting for 15 out of 18 titles before the league was realigned. Seeing a matchup between the Devils and Flyers is a memory that you will never forget!
