The fight for glory and honor

The Navy football program is one of the oldest in the country, first getting its start in 1879 when football rules were still similar to rugby. In those early years the Navy team was a constant threat, even beating the legendary powerhouse the University of Michigan and ranking in the top ten of the AP poll several times. The 1960s produced two Heisman Trophy winners, Joe Bellino and Roger Staubach. Under the leadership of George Welsh, the Midshipmen competed in three bowl games in the 1970s. In 2002 Paul Johnson took the helm, leading the Navy to establish dominance over their archrivals, the Army Black Knights. Showdowns with other branches of the armed forces are intense, with Navy Midshipmen-Army Black Knights games and Navy Midshipmen-Air Force Falcons games some of the most anticipated of the year. Ken Niumatalolo took over for Johnson in 2008, and the Midshipmen won the Commander-in-Chief's Trophy in 2008, 2009, and 2012.
