Becoming the Best
The Canadiens are based in Montreal, Quebec, and are members of the Atlantic Division of the Eastern Conference in the NHL. The club’s official name is le Club de hockey Canadien, and some nicknames for the team include Les Canadiens and Le Grand Club. Founded in 1909, the Canadiens are the longest continuously operating professional ice hockey team worldwide and is the only existing NHL club to predate the founding of the NHL. The Canadiens won their first of many Stanley Cups in the 1915-1916 season. In 1917, the Canadiens joined the NHL as one of the Original Six teams alongside the Toronto Maple Leafs, Boston Bruins, Chicago Blackhawks, Detroit Red Wings, and New York Rangers. As the first World War came to a close and the Great Depression hit, the Canadiens saw a decline in player development and attendance, almost causing the franchise to close up shop. Throughout the 1940s and the 1960s the Canadiens won twelve Stanley Cup Championships, dominating the league. With their most recent win in 1993, the Canadiens are the most successful NHL team, having won the Stanley Cup twenty-four times to date. They have been built by powerhouse players such as Henri Richard, Larry Robinson, Guy Lafleur, Jean Beliveau, Rick Roy, and dozens of others. Today top players on the team include Max Domi, Carey Price, Shea Weber, and Jonathan Drouin.
The Montreal Canadiens colors are red, white, and blue with their logo dubbed as a symbol of their full name Club de hockey Canadien, “CHC”. Often times the Canadiens are referred to as the Habs, a nickname that dates back to 1924 when the owner of Madison Square Garden mistook the “H” in the logo for meaning Habitants. The “H” stands for hockey, but due to the traction that the name got it has stuck with the team ever since. Due to Montreal being a native French speaking city, the Canadiens home games are announced in French and English, with the national anthem “O Canada” being sung as a mix of the two languages.
