History of the Anaheim Ducks
The Anaheim Ducks were originally founded in 1993 by their original owners The Walt Disney Company. They were based off the Disney film The Mighty Ducks, as their original name was Mighty Ducks of Anaheim. In 2005 Henry and Susan Samueli purchased the team from Disney and changed their name to the Anaheim Ducks.
Prior to being sold by Disney, the Ducks had made it to four out of thirteen playoffs. They made it all the way to the Stanley Cup Finals in 2003, only to lose in game seven to the New Jersey Devils. The Ducks found themselves again fighting for the Stanley Cup in 2007, battling against the Ottawa Senators. They won the series 4-1 and took home the franchise’s first and only Stanley Cup. Since winning the Stanley Cup in 2007, the Ducks have qualified for all but two playoffs. Besides their one Stanley Cup, the team also has two Conference Championships, and six Division Championships.
The Anaheim Ducks Arena
The Anaheim Ducks play their home games at the Honda Center. The arena is known for hosting the Anaheim Ducks as well as other events such as concerts, and other sporting events. It will also be the host arena for the indoor volleyball matches during the 2028 Summer Olympics.
Rivalries
The Anaheim Ducks have two rivals within the Pacific Division; the San Jose Sharks and the Los Angeles Kings. The Ducks and the Sharks have had a rivalry since the Ducks have come into existence, and it continues to heat up as the two consistently face each other in the playoffs. The Kings and the Ducks have a more complex rivalry called the “Freeway Face-Off”, as the famous Interstate 5 separates the two arenas. The “Freeway Face-Off” is about the series of games that the two plays against each other.
