A Twisted Family Fate

The opera opens with Siegmund, half man and half god, fleeing from pursuers. He falls under an ash tree, where the beautiful Sieglinde finds him. They fall in love, but it is a doomed love. The two are in fact twins, separated at birth, and the gods are angry at their incestuous affair. Wotan, the ruler of the gods, instructs his daughter, the Valkyrie Brunnhilde, to allow Siegmund to die in a battle against Sieglinde's husband. But Brunnhilde is moved by the passion between Siegmund and Sieglinde, and she refuses to force Siegmund's death. What follows is a tragic story of love and punishment, honor and betrayal, as the passions of both gods and men struggle against each other. Wagner completed Die Walkure as part of his Ring tetralogy, deeply infused with Nordic and Germanic mythology. It debuted in Munich in 1870 and has since become the most popular of the series.
