Original Eight Member
The Baltimore Orioles are just one of eight original charter teams from 1901’s American League. With the team dating back to 1901, they were originally positioned in Milwaukee and were known as the Milwaukee Brewers. After only one season, the team was moved to St. Louis where they were known as the St. Louis Browns. The teamed remained in St. Louis for 52 years until they were bought out in 1953 and moved to Baltimore. Upon their move they were named after Maryland’s state bird, the oriole. From 1966 to 1983 the team saw their most successful period in franchise history. They appeared in six World Series and came home with three titles in 1966, 1970 and 1983. This period was so well known in Oriole history that several of the players were inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. Legends like Earl Weaver, Brooks Robinson, Eddie Murray and Cal Ripken Jr. have all played for the Orioles, adding to the team's legendary status. After this period of immense success, the team plateaued only capturing a few division titles and playoff appearances. Beginning in 1998 the team began a losing streak that would last for 14 seasons. Only able to go up from their worst, the team was able to qualify for the postseason three times, securing a division title and an advancement to the American League Championship. Just when it seemed like the team was on the road to victory, they finished the 2018 season with their worst losing record in franchise history. As a result, the team fired long time coach and general manager Buck Showalter and Dan Duquette. With the 2024 season looming, fans are eager to see what the team can do under new coaching and managerial staff!
A Ball Park Inspiration
Oriole Park at Camden Yards is one of the most beloved stadiums in all of baseball. Opened in 1992 as a replacement for Memorial Stadium, it is one of the most highly praised ball parks in professional baseball. Its construction was the first in major league baseball to have a retro design, soon encouraging other ballparks to follow in suit. Intended to be oriented more towards fans, there are picnic areas above and behind the bullpen where fans can enjoy concessions while still being able to watch the game.
Battle of the Beltways
The Baltimore Orioles only have one major rivalry, and it is with their nearby neighbor the Washington Nationals. The two have been battling it out since they became neighboring teams when the Nationals moved to Washington in 2005. Games between the two often get very heated, and they are often referred to as the Beltway Series. Currently Baltimore leads the series with a 26-20 record.
