History of the Arizona Coyotes
The Arizona Coyotes were originally known as the Winnipeg Jets back when they were founded in 1971. They were originally not members of the National Hockey League, they were a part of the World Hockey Association. After eight years of playing the WHA ceased all operations sending the Winnipeg Jets off to play in the National Hockey League, being only one of four teams that were absorbed by the league. In 1996 the team moved to Phoenix and were renamed the Phoenix Coyotes, which remained their name through 2014. In 2009 the team’s original owner Jerry Moyes filed for bankruptcy resulting in the NHL taking ownership of the team. On August 5, 2013 the NHL sold the Coyotes to IceArizona Acquisition Co., LLC., who remained the owners until 2017 when Andrew Barroway bought them out. On June 27, 2014 the owners changed the name to what it is today, the Arizona Coyotes.
Throughout the history of the franchise playing in the NHL they have made the post season a total of eight times, only to come away with one division title in 2012. After a disappointing exit in the 2012 playoffs, the Coyotes have yet to return to the post season. Now six seasons since they last qualified for the post season, this young talented team is looking to add their first Stanley Cup in franchise history.
The Arizona Coyotes Arena
The Coyotes play their home games at the Gila River Arena in Glendale, Arizona. The arena is also known for hosting lacrosse, basketball and concerts. In 2016, the team had announced that they were in the works of building a new arena in Tempe, Arizona that would host them as well as the Arizona State University men’s hockey team. However, the deal fell through after ASU left the agreement, leaving the Coyotes to play at the Gila River Arena.
Rivalries
Like many other teams in the league, the Coyotes have their fair share of rivals. Their main rival being the Detroit Red Wings, mainly because of their many meet ups during the post season which all ultimately led the Coyotes being eliminated. Other main rivals include the Los Angeles Kings, San Jose Sharks, Chicago Blackhawks as well as the Anaheim Ducks.
