About U2
Consisting of members Bono, The Edge, Larry Mullen, Jr. and Adam Clayton, rock band U2 was formed in Dublin, Ireland in 1976. The band mates met while in high school and began to play in small venues and clubs across Ireland. The group's music focused heavily on Christianity and they became especially concerned with issues pertaining to social justice, charity and activism. The band soon amassed a loyal local fan base and subsequently caught the eye of manager Paul McGuinness. Having recorded independently since their formation, U2 signed up with the label Island Records in 1980.
U2's first album, Boy, hit the charts soon after they joined Island Records and proved to be a critical and commercial success. After the album's release, U2 embarked on a tour of the U.S., gaining further acclaim and building an international following. Fans became eager to get their hands on U2 tickets, and cheap tickets were relatively easy to come by. In particular, Bono's energetic and passionate performances drew in large crowds and helped develop the band's reputation for being provocative and groundbreaking.
Since their debut into the global music scene, U2 has consistently and creatively produced music that deals with a range of socio-political themes. Their second album, October, explored the band's difficulty with reconciling their Christian beliefs with the commercial aspects of fame. On the verge of splitting up, the band instead opted to use their platform for the social good. Their 1983 album, War, contained the beloved single "Sunday Bloody Sunday," the lyrics of which deeply criticize the violent actions of the Irish Republic Army, while paying tribute to the innocent victims of the Irish troubles. Bono has often referred to the track as "a song of hope and a song of disgust." The band's song was so popular and influential that they even received a kidnapping threat from the IRA themselves. The threats did nothing to deter U2, however, and their 1984 album, Unforgettable Fire, continued to explore issues of social justice. Two of the most popular songs on the album, "MLK" and "Pride,"were written as tributes to the famed civil rights activist Martin Luther King, Jr.
U2 reached the pinnacle of their activism after they became involved with 1985's Live Aid charity concert, an event which raised over $250 million for the Ethiopian drought. After 1985, U2 produced arguably their most famous album to date, The Joshua Tree, which earned a Grammy award. The extended playlist included two incredibly popular singles, "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" and "With or Without You", both of which reached the No.1 spot in a number of international charts.
Throughout the 90s and 2000s, the group continued to produce music and sell out shows across the world, with droves of fans eager to secure cheap U2 tickets. The band's most recent tour, Innocence and Experience, concluded in December 2015. The group has also remained dedicated to social and political activism, and in 2005 they played a significant role in a series of charitable Live 8 concerts designed to raise awareness about Third World debt and poverty.
