Becoming a Spice Girl

The Spice Girls got their start back in 1994 after a management team had decided that they wanted to form an all-girl band to compete with the ever-popular boy bands that were popping up around the country. After holding several rounds of auditions, they finally landed on five members; Mel B, Emma Bunton, Melanie C, Geri Halliwell, and Victoria Beckham. During their time under their original management they would train to function as a group for musical and dance performances. In the later months of 1994, the band began to get frustrated with their lack of success and they began looking for other management sources. In October of 1995 they finally got their big break after endless months of soliciting managers around the country, they signed a deal with Virgin Records. It was at this point in time that they would become known as the Spice Girls, with the girls becoming known as Scary, Sporty, Baby, Ginger, and Posh Spice.

In the summer of 1996 the group began an extensive tour throughout the west coast of the United States, all while writing their debut album which would have singles debut in the latter half of the summer in the UK. The debut single for their album “Wannabe” became an instant success, launching the Spice Girls to international fame. The single became a number one hit in over 37 countries and eventually became the bestselling single by an all-female group. In November of 1996 they finally released their full-length album Spice, which with its instant success garnering the group millions of fans, could only be compared to Beatlemania. The following spring the album was released in the United States, becoming the best-selling album of 1997 being certified platinum seven times and selling over 7.4 million copies. With all their success the group would go on to release several albums and tour throughout the world, along the way winning several awards. In 2000 after many of the group members began to start families they decided to go on an indefinite hiatus, allowing several of them to focus on their solo careers. In June of 2007 the group announced that they were going to be doing a reunion tour, kicking off in Vancouver in December of that year. The hype surrounding this tour was so high that tickets sold out within 38 seconds of them being on sale, prompting the group to add additional stops on the tour. After the tour finished in 2008, the group took once again another hiatus. They reunited once again when the Summer Olympic games came to their home country in 2012, performing at the closing ceremonies. In the summer of 2018 it was announced that the group would be doing yet again another reunion tour, this time without Victoria Beckham also known as Posh Spice. The Spice World-2019 Tour kicked off in May with their first performance in Cardiff.
