Very good service. Room is clean. Public bath is great. Food is delicious and plentiful. Great place to spend with family. Just 10 minutes drive to Hotaka Ropeway but far from Takayama town.
Our stay at Hodakaso Sangestsu was good. The hotel is a traditional-style Ryokan with nice facilities: a wood-lined indoor onsen, outdoor onsen, and sauna which was a big bonus. We really enjoyed the more sulfurous quality to the onsen.
The room was clean and adequate, but a little tight for our family of five.
This inn is between Matsumoto City and Takayama City, it's a good place to stay if you want to visit The Chubu Sangaku National Park. There isn't much around the inn or in the area, it's rural and very beautiful. The Inn's meal were excellent and their onsens were also very nice and pleasant. It was great coming back from a day of hiking in the park to take a warm soak and have an excellent meal. The staff was also extremely friendly and helpful.
From the outside this hotel doesn't look too great... BUT as soon as you step inside you know you are somewhere special! It is traditional Japanese in every sense of the word. A fantastic Ryokan experience and they catered for us vegetarians too ( a rare breed in Japan ). The breakfast was stunning. We didn't have dinner at the hotel but in a restaurant a short taxi ride away. The main plus of this hotel is the truly amazing onsen... indoor and outdoor. You can even book a private onsen for 2 people for about 1000 yen for 30mins. Bargain.
Beautiful is one word I can describe this hotel which is awarded 5-star. They have a one star Michelin for their restaurant which served our half board. Fantastic onsen with both outdoor and indoor pools. We can also take a shuttle to nearby sister hotel for onsen which has bigger outdoor pools.
Great introduction to an onsen. New ammenities in a traditional setting. Peaceful & relaxing. Half board well worth it - food was amazing & very filling. Not much English spoken but staff super helpful & accomodating
Wonderful experience to enjoy the indoor and outdoor hotel onsens. The free hotel shuttle bus can take you to another outdoor large mix onsen 2km away. The Hida beef Japanese’s dinner is super delicious and the staff service is exceptionally good.
I strongly recommend this place.
It was one of the most wonderful ryokans I have ever staied. A very Japanese one.
The interior is breathtaking and the food was a healthy and very nice presentated .
If you have time, please ask the staff for the outside lotenburo near hotel.
It takes about five minutes by bus( a free shuttle one) to this wonderful place.

Liked: Staff & service
Discreet onsen hotel in Japanese alps area. Nohi bus station is only 50m away from the hotel, so arrival by bus is quite easy. It takes about 90 mins from Takayama Station to the hotel.
Hotel staff are very helpful though with very limited English (probably 90% of the clietele are Japanese).
Onsen is very nice, very clean with beautiful landscape design.
This was a lovely Ryokan with exeprional detail to service. Although iris 1.5 bus ride outside of Takayama, it is in the mountaions and the perfect getaway if you’re coming from Tokyo or Kyoto. Food is great, onsens great.
The Hodakaso Sengetsu's humble facade hides a beautiful interior, with many traditional breakout and tatami spaces to relax, all centered around an stunning waterfall feature.
The service was the very definition of 'omotenashi' - everything was brought to you before you even know you wanted it, and our car was waiting each morning ready to go.
The outdoor mixed onsen was a delight, allowing the entire family to relax after a long days hiking in the incredible Takayama region that surrounds it it. Plus the supplied modesty towels allowed us to indulge without embarrassment.
Every meal was made from fresh, local produce and presented impeccably. I will definitely be back.
We wanted to experience a traditional Japanese Inn. We found it warm and inviting. You are up in the mountains and need to take the bus to town which can be 90 min each way. The scenery in the area is spectacular. The food at the inn is only traditional Japanese. As a US family of 4 we found it a unique and interesting stay. Onsen was spectacular
