At the western edge of Black Butte Ranch is a getaway whose comfortable charm and renewed amenities blend perfectly with the spectacular surroundings. It’s a well-appointed but cozy retreat, and hot tub-equipped, making for a relaxing headquarters for the endless outdoor possibilities - biking, hiking, skiing, fishing, golf and tennis, all in one of the most scenic spots in the American West.

The knotty pine paneling, expansive picture windows, and 14-foot living-room ceiling fit the mountain motif, as does a classic, lava-rock fireplace that seems straight out of a ski lodge. The updated kitchen includes honey-hued alder cabinetry, a combination convection/microwave oven, and a gorgeous refinish of a pine picnic-style table.

A TV, DVD player, Bluetooth sound box, and WiFi availability are part of the living room, which adjoins a mud room designed to accommodate extensive ski equipment or double as staging area for the hot tub outside. The lower floor also houses the home’s a laundry room.

Upstairs, you’ll find an oversize room featuring a set of bunk beds, a TV, and an accompanying half-bath; and a loft with a futon. The loft has a table and another TV/DVD setup, and it makes for a great kids' gaming area. Also on the upper level is the largest bathroom.

Go outside the mud room downstairs and step onto a 1,300-square-foot deck, one of the largest at Black Butte. It’s easily big enough for entertaining, or it can be merely an inviting spot to relax on a variety of outdoor furniture.

The home is a great jumping-off point for the array of outdoor pursuits in Central Oregon. On-site are two memorable golf courses. Big Meadow, named by GolfWeek Magazine in 2013 as one of 'The Best Courses You Can Play' in Oregon, is a picturesque layout with mountain vistas, including the iconic view of the volcanic peak Three-Fingered Jack from the 14th tee. Glaze Meadow is a tighter track, but with similarly appealing panoramas, including the North Sister and Mount Washington.

A maze of bike paths crisscross Black Butte. There are four outdoor swimming pools, an indoor pool, a sauna, and a workout facility. The Ranch has four dining options, a couple of which overlook Phalarope Lake, a haven for kayaking, canoeing, paddleboarding, and fly-fishing. Horseback riding is another possibility, through stables on-site. Beyond the Ranch, but not far beyond, is an outdoor lover’s paradise. Hoodoo Ski Area is 14 miles west, or to the east, you can venture outside Bend to one of the West’s best ski destinations, Mt. Bachelor. Fishing, hiking, camping, and other water sports options abound. The Western-themed town of Sisters is only eight miles east, and bustling Bend is just 45 minutes away.

House smelled like mold ((
This will be my first bad review. When we arrived around 5pm to check in for our Memorial Day weekend stay, the house smelled like mold. The smell was really bad in one of the downstairs bathrooms , the laundry room and the nearby bedroom. I spent 3 hours on the phone with Vacasa, and all they could offer was to send someone for a cleaning the next morning. We could not use the downstairs bedroom and bathroom. Despite promises, no one showed up to clean in the morning. I continued to text and call Vacasa, and finally at 4:00 pm the cleaners came and cleaned the affected areas. It took several hours of ventilating before the smell finally subsided enough for us to use these rooms. A few words about the house itself: the house is smaller than it looks in photos on Vacasa site, there are some updates like new kitchen appliances, but some areas are old and some parts are just ancient. The locks in some bathrooms do not work.

Perfectly adequate with a few surprises
We picked this house because it looked to have a spacious living area and plenty of bedrooms so our extended family could enjoy time together. Warning--the pictures are a bit deceiving in that the living space is much smaller than it appears. The sectional was not enough seating for the four adults to relax comfortably, let alone the kids. When we arrived it was cold and because the house is heated with electric heaters in each room it took a good 24 hours to warm up adequately. That said, the hot tub was amazing, the kitchen and bathrooms were clean and functional, and the bunk/sitting room was a perfect hang-out space for the kids. Overall the house was clean, but there was a strong smell of mildew on the main floor from the washing machine, and an entire load of sheets was left in the dryer from the previous cleaning. A suggestion to the hosts for winter guests: it would be very nice to have a few logs by the fireplace ready to go, and a note that more wood is available outside. We did discover this after reading the guest book, but we couldn't find the wood pile in the dark and had to wait until morning. Meanwhile, the house was very chilly and drafty while the electric heaters did their slow work of warming the big spaces.

Family Fun
Our family loved it. Enough space to spread everybody out Grandkids very much enjoy the pool facility. We all enjoyed the hot tub and the time spent together. Things that could use some improvements are the very hard beds, check out time being so early for the amount you pay (10:00am) could not locate a home manual for information on where firewood could be found and how to make sure damper is open on fireplace. But overall our family enjoyed this home.

Great trip to Black Butte Ranch
This is our second stay in this home and again it was great! We had plenty of room to include more family in this trip and enjoyed the big deck and hot tub every night. We did miss out having air conditioning this trip, as we landed there during a heat wave! We were happy to see fans in each room to get us by though.

Thanksgiving and 50th anniversary
My wife and I celebrated our 50th wedding anniversary and Thanksgiving with our kids and grand kids, and great-grand daughter. We enjoyed our stay at the Black Butte Ranch property as we played games, laughed, ate and enjoyed each others company. The property was a good place for us all to gather and share memories.

Amateur hour at BBR
The house is nice, unassuming from the front but does have an impressive back porch, kitchen and fireplace. Located on Hawks Beard the main road so there is some traffic noise at night if windows are open, but very accessible to both north and south sides of the ranch. Quite a few things went wrong for us though for our visit here: -Kitchen garbage and recycling cans stuffed full of trash from previous guests. I was told to toss it in the ‘onsite dumpster’ from VRBO staff but this is a house, not a condo in a complex so the instructions didn’t quite make sense. They did come by in the morning and have it removed though which was appreciated. Most importantly though, I am quite certain the house was NOT SANITIZED as advertised amidst Covid-19 concerns if they didn’t even take the trash out. TV remote (which was out of batteries) and toilet seats were also sticky and gross. There was broken glass and bottle caps on the table outside that I had to dispose of upon arrival. -We has a massive grease fire with two foot high flames in the bbq that could have ignited the propane tank after grilling chicken and vegetables for a mere 15 mins. We laugh and now call charred foods Black Butte chicken. -Cockroach in the kitchen upon arrival -Hot tub water level low and the kids got sprayed in the face when the jets came on, water was also murky -Dishwasher was not secured and it about rocked out of its place in the cabinet when the drawer was open. Water supply lines to the kitchen faucet were also reversed, no big deal but should get fixed when one pays this much for a two night stay. -No garbage bags or cork screw on site. BBR is an amazing place, I just won’t be staying here when we come back.

Beautiful house but not clean
Our first impression of this house when we first walked in was how beautiful the house was. After getting settled and doing things around the house we realized the house was not as clean as it probably should have been. The downstairs bathroom next to the utility room was not cleaned, two of the upstairs bedrooms were coated with pollen which at first we thought was dust until wiping it away and realizing it was yellow. The comforters were even coated with pollen. The middle upstairs bedroom has large stains over the comforter that looks like coffee but after seeing the bathroom we just hoped it was clean. Most of the plates in the cabinet had to be recleaned because they were dirty, and a couple of the pots and pans were the same way.

pretty clean, comfy and rustic. I was surprised that I had to pay additional fee once I got there for the recreational stuff THAT WE NEVER EVEN USED, in fact we never even planned to use. 12 of us. ya pretty penny. lighted main roads woulda been cool too. but all in all, it was quiet, and pleasant. :)
