Architectural Digest Masterpiece 18th Century Tuscan Villa

Le Tanelle is a very special place situated on a high private promontory in beautiful countryside on the edge of the Maremma.

When you first arrive, as you are standing next to the carefully restored large stone farmhouse, the views of San Gimignano, Volterra and the Pisan Alps can take your breath away. Sunlight dances on the infinity pool as the water slips over the edge and you view the patchwork fields, vineyards, hilltop towns, and the wild wooded chestnut and oak forests.

You enter through wrought iron gates into a covered courtyard with a huge brick archway with a private bedroom off of it. The large kitchen, fully equipped, was once a stall for cattle and has the original stone flooring and troughs. Sienese marble countertops and a central table made of old chestnut, complement the rustic character.

The large dining/living area has comfortable seating around a fireplace. Through arched glass doors you step down to the terrace with seating overlooking the pool and the spectacular views.

Next to the terrace is a shady wisteria pergola with a marble topped table for dining “al fresco”, surrounded by flowers and rosemary. Nearby is a large stone BBQ fireplace grille.

Moving on from the sitting area you enter a space originally for wine caskets and grain. Part of this is now a laundry room and a bathroom with shower.

The main entrance with the old bread oven has a majestic stone stairway leading to a large upstairs living room with the original enormous hooded Tuscan kitchen fireplace surrounded by a relaxed seating area. There are two spacious double bedrooms, a bath with marble shower and a large bathroom with an old claw footed bathtub and a separate marble shower. The fourth bedroom has a double, two single beds, and a small bedroom off it with a single bed.

The charming hill towns of Radicondoli and Castelnuovo are 15 to 20 minutes by car. In about an hour’s drive through fascinating countryside you can reach San Gimignano, Volterra, Siena, Massa Marittma and the sandy coast. Florence is about 1½ hours.

Le Tanelle is a magical private space set in pristine countryside. The Italians always describe Tanelle as “tranquillo”. After a hot day in Florence or Siena it is paradise to return here to this oasis where there is always a light breeze.

When you are at Le Tanelle you have total privacy, but not completely isolated as there are other houses less than a half a mile away.

Surrounded by nature, with the woods behind and the fields below there are wildflowers, birds, deer, fox, wild boar and a 10th century castle just a few miles away. Perfect for hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding not far away.

A real get away from it location
This property is truly isolated, about two hours drive from Florence airport. A robust vehicle is required as the roads of Tuscany are a little rundown and the access to Le Tanelle is an unmade, steep drive. The view and isolation is worth the effort. There have been changes to the property since the marketing photographs on the site. Some improvements like safety cables around the pool area making it safer for children other elements of the building have moved on as the restoration is a work in progress. Deer freezing in the pasture most morning whilst you drink your coffee is one of the finest ways to start your day whilst looking at views as far as the eye can see. Check in and out process was a little sketchy, contact the greeter about 30 minutes before arrival, as they have to travel to the property to meet you. Check out time should be confirmed, as our booking stated 11:00 but the cleaners arrived at 09:20 and pressured us to leave at 10:00. The pool is an absolute blessing with the kids, as it was hot and we kept them cool and entertained. Great location for day trips out, as far as Pisa and Siena. Be mindful that WiFi does not reach through the entire building and is slow (if this is an issue on a get away from it holiday). Television was not even turned on, mainly due to its age but also because we didn’t need it. There is an outdoor barbeque and pizza oven (check the pizza oven is working). Four large bedrooms (3 upstairs with two bathrooms), 1 bedroom downstairs slightly dislocated as its across a courtyard from the kitchen, with bathroom in the main part of the house. Good shops and restaurants within 30 minutes drive.

Tuscan essence and beauty.
We were a family of 7 plus a 10 month old baby and we adored our stay. The kitchen is perfect to cook in community, the pool has beautiful views and a great breeze in the Tuscan summer. There was plenty of space for everyone and many different communal areas to hang out. We were even provided bed and high chair for baby! The check-in was very easy and the communication with the owner and the property manager was quick and supportive. Like many places in Tuscany the house is about 25 minutes from the nearest town (that has small supermarket). So be prepared to be a bit in the middle of nowhere, we of course loved this fact. Also just to take unto account the appliances and furniture are a bit on the old side. The kitchen has all that you need to cook. And the house is very cool in temperature in the hot summer. Highly recommend to spend some unforgettable time in this great house.

The perfect retreat
After a long climb through the winding roads we finally arrived at La Tanelle. Entering in via the poolside we were blown away by the breathtaking views, the rolling tuscan hills seemed endless. The house itself is stunning, all bedrooms were very spacious and the kitchen was well equipped. We spent most evenings out under the pergola drinking wine and playing cards. We took it easy in the daytime and ventured out to local village hilltop towns. All very beautiful and relaxing. It is quite remote so you will need to load up on the way with groceries. Would highly recommend

Beutiful house and location
This is a very charming house, restored with great respect of the history of the house. This means that there are nice bathrooms (not shown in the pictures, btw), a well functioning kitchen and a modern pool, yet the style and atmosphere is like being a couple of centuries back in history. The house is located in the mountains with a fantastic view. But it is not that easy to get to it (the location is not accurately specified in the rental add -- the GPS coordinates are 43.206814, 10.962262 ). It takes 20-25 minutes to get to the nearest store and and 1 hour and 20 minutes to Siena.

A kings villa
The first time you drive up the, somewhat challenging, last part of the driveway up to the house you are taken by surprise. The house and view is a true masterpiece. We were speechless. The night was setting, the valley and sky covered in gold. Although communication was unclear for us in the beginning due to a missed email (we missed the number). The host & homeowner had contacted each other and we got a warm welcome. Even though we were a bit late. During our stay we had a defect but support was swiftly arranged. Beds are good.
