The Criterion has seen better days. They are renovating it, but not quickly. The rooms are plain and have some wear and tear to them. However, it is clean, there is a refrigerator, the water was hot and the pressure was good, it is on a quiet street, the staff are there 24 hrs a day (although there is no housekeeping on the weekends), and it is convenient to everything. It is also economical. which is why I booked it in the first place. If you just want a safe, quiet, clean place to rest your head, I recommend it highly. If you want a luxury room with a minibar to hang out in, go somewhere else.

Noisy drilling very early in morning. TV not working properly. Air Con not working. Seedy, damp, feel to hotel. Always locked front door. Very snappy rude night staff man. Shouted at me during check out. Great place to stay if you are a drug user. AVOID.

Hotel was quite run down, mould in bathrooms, chipped paint, stains on carpet, chipped furniture, broken wood around door handles. Staff were friendly and helpful. Seemed big old and lonely there. Definitely a budget stay.

Comfortable and clean. We had a renovated double room. The place is outdated but you paid for what you got. It was a bed to sleep in as we were out for the whole doing the aights of Perth and its surroundings

Cheap and Convenient
Have stayed at this cheaper, older hotel many times. Front desk staff were friendly on check in and check out. $250 bond taken on entry, refunded on exit but can take up to 5 days. Area near the lift has a musty smell. The room had a sweet, cloying smell of cleaning products. The room and bathroom were clean with tea, coffee, sugar and milk supplies and shampoo and soap. The towels were fluffy. The room had a kettle and mini fridge, desk and 2 chairs plus a small table and luggage storage. The hotel is one block from the Hay Street Mall and there are some cafes close by. Public transport very close too.

Paint peeling, established funnel web spider webs and an undistinguished smell that actually leached onto my cloths. There is a difference between art deco and old, dirty and decrepit. Immediate area around hotel , late night and early morning, felt unsafe with homeless , drunk and prostitution going on . Do not recommend and will not be returning

The Criterion was Ok -- serviceable. The location was central, in an area with fast-food restaurants, and with walkable access to the downtown area. There is one small place near the hotel that is slightly seedy, but I didn't feel threatened. The hotel has seen better days, but again, is serviceable. The bathroom was nice, the TV worked, beds OK, although I didn't see any heat source in the room (fortunately, it wasn't quite cold enough to require heat). The main drawback was that the wi-fi didn't reach to the third floor where our room was, so we had to go down to the lobby to do e-mail and messaging. I believe the first floor may have had wi-fi, but we were on the third floor. The late-night McDonald's was just a half-block away, which compensated for any inconveniences for jet-lagged travelers from LAX, 21 jet-hours away plus layover time!
