This is truly a Wildlife Paradise!
We stayed two nights and I wish we had booked more time there. Wildlife Paradise is at the end of a 2-km rough road east and uphill from the San Luis school, but it is well worth the drive. You don't need 4-wheel drive but you do need a short wheel-base 2-wd. This property is more like a two-room bed and breakfast. It's main advantage is that it is off-the-beaten path and is surrounded by rain forest. You won't see the crowds of people that make a Monteverde visit challenging these days. Many species of wildlife can be seen right from the porch - 100's of birds, monkeys, coatis, agoutis, and more. The hosts, Eduardo and Nidia, are gracious, and will do much to make your stay most complete. With advance notice you can request breakfasts, lunches and dinners, as needed. There is a pizza joint right nearby; other restaurants are in San Luis or Monterverde-Sta Elena. If you are interested in birdwatching, Eduardo is a self-educated guide with 27 years experience. If you are interested in Costa Rican cuisine Nidia is an experienced chef. I went on three bird walks with Eduardo and he is excellent at choosing the type of walk, and habitat, and pointing out birds in the thick jungle. There are nearby trails to walk, or he can take you to Monteverde or the other three reserves nearby. His private bird tour fee is reasonable. He speaks basic English, but some additional Spanish ability on the part of the visitor would be beneficial. I would go back there in a heartbeat!!
