Room 116 smelled like mold
Room 116 had a moldy smell. Water stains were visible on wall. I asked to change rooms and they allowed a change to the second floor. I don't think they should be utilizing that room at all with that strong smell of mold. The second room had no such smell.
I was shocked how pretty our room was. The Japanese garden with a pond hearing the sound of river. There were two chairs on the balcony and we could sit there to enjoy the view. The foods, breakfast and dinner were excellent. The private hot spring and inside and outside hot springs were superb (yes, I tried all the hot springs the hotel has offered.) Definitely the money for the stay was well spent and we will come back to this place again. I am extremely impressed how the staff were friendly and trained well. If you know “Omotenashi”, the hotel offered all. Thank you so much for the excellent experience!!
Good value for the price, our room had a balcony can overlook the river and the koi pond. Shops and the tourist information in walking distance. The service and the breakfast are excellent.
Do The manager was very nice. Vicky, our waitress at dinner was great. What caused my low rating was the room I got. I got the absolute worst view from my room I’ve ever had at any Onsen, no matter the price. Unacceptable for the enormous price I paid. Would never, ever recommend this property. I looked out at the rooftops of the property’s outbuildings, looking directly at a huge pink sightseeing bus, and huge electric lines covered in bright yellow plastic. We asked to be changed to another room and they wanted to charge us $500 extra to be moved to a larger room with an extremely mediocre view. Then they asked us to go check out another property nearby for an extra 4000 yen and we couldn’t believe our eyes. It was an old, aging property next to construction piles. It was a slap in the face and a waste of our precious travel time.
The ryokan is very near to the highway bus stop from Fukuoka Airport. The staff are extremely helpful. Two of them can speak Mandarin thus communication is not a problem. Another Japanese staff even helped us to make reservations for bus tickets to Kumamoto.
Both the breakfast and dinner were nice. The kaiseki dinner was simply fantastic.
I arrived via highway bus from Fukuoka airport. The entrance to the ryokan was nice but not outstanding; however, it was clean and tidy. When I was there at the end of March 2018, they had employees who spoke English and Chinese so communication should be fine for foreigners as well. The food for both dinner and breakfast was outstanding and so was the presentation, but be sure and reserve a couple of hours for each meal. The meals were served in the dining area that was partitioned into smaller cubicles. Each room's guests were then assigned to their own area with a pull-down shade separating each set of guests.
The onsen itself was nice. The indoor one for men was a bit small, but quite adequate. The outdoor one for men was actually mixed so you may (but quite unlikely) see women there - although the women have their own area as well; its water's temperature seemed to be higher than the indoor onsen's so be a bit careful.
I was placed in the annex as I had booked under short notice so not many rooms remained available. There are also rooms in the main building as well. Location of the ryokan was convenient and close to the shops in the area. It was also close to the highway bus stop; however, the map at the bus stop was poor. Use GPS and Maps if you have them!
The location was exceptional for the price, the onsen downstairs was great, the rooms were as described. One thing that could be improved is the reception desk - sometimes we had to wait a long while for someone to appear, and the staff was very kind and nice, but not very helpful - they said they cant reserve bus seats for sameday travel when we were desperate (and we managed to do it no problem at tourist centre), they said they cant give me larger, more comfortable slippers (though I had those slippers the day earlier) and we couldn’t swap wet swimming suit for dry one (although in this case it might have been a language barrier). All in all a pleasant stay for a good price and I would recommend it.
Kurokawa is a very beautiful place. The onsen was awesome especially the outdoor one. Service-wise I feel can be improved. When we reached there the hotel staff did not help with the luggages unlike other hotels we have been to. Otherwise it has been a great stay.
