There is Homey & Lived-In and Then There is This House
The house offers ample space for a group, easily hosting our family of 8, and is conveniently located 15-20 minutes from Madison. The kitchen is newly renovated and quite nice.
However, there are several issues to note. First, the house is in a state of construction that should not be allowed for house rentals. Despite some disclosure in the listing, we were surprised by the extent of incomplete work, including rickety entryway stairs lacking railings and exposed unfinished wood (particularly unsafe for children). Also, the bedrooms all seemed to have holes in the walls or were partially under construction.
Additionally, the house has a strong, musty pet odor. While this may not be a problem for pet owners, it caused allergic reactions in our group from sitting on furniture and using bedding.
The pool, while refreshing, also needs maintenance; the liner was lifting, and the area around the diving board was in poor condition, raising more safety concerns.
The cleanliness of the home was also troubling. While appearing tidied, a closer inspection revealed the need for a deep clean. Used toothbrushes and corroded batteries in drawers, dust chunks & construction materials under beds, and moldy toys & cups in the bathroom.
Host should be VERY transparent about ongoing work as it plays a major role in decision to rent. Clearly just someone's house being passed off as a holiday rental. Overall, while the property has potential, in its current state, it is unfit for guests.
