Romantic Holiday Cottage, Kington, Nr Hay On Wye, Welsh Borders Wales

Blodeuwedd Cottage is located on a single track no-through road and on the edge of the attractive and thriving market town of Kington, a 'Border Town' in the Welsh Marches. It’s only 10 minutes walk to local shops, deli, tourist info, post office, takeaways, restaurants, pubs etc. The cottage is named after Blodeuwedd (meaning 'Flower Face'), a beautiful woman who was cursed and turned into an owl in one of the stories belonging to the Mabinogion, a famous collection of old Welsh legends.

The cottage is several hundred years old and is one half of a traditional Welsh long-house. One can see how the central circular fireplace has been divided in two, probably a hundred years ago or more. Both the lounge and front bedroom have lots of exposed beams and many of the walls downstairs are natural local stone.

The cottage is wonderfully romantic for a couple and quite magical for children and therefore also ideally suited for families. We also regularly let to walkers and cyclists. The property is full of character with lots of period features. Charming living room with exposed beams and wood burning stove. Bright kitchen, spacious garden and terrace with BBQ. Fitted with all mod cons such as individually adjustable heating in all rooms, DVD player, Sky TV, internet, fully equipped kitchen, washing machine etc.

Use of local guide books and maps are complimentary during your stay.

Sorry, no pets allowed (not even small and cuddly ones).

We use the place too for weekends and have tried to make it a really lovely place to stay… somewhere to relax and the perfect base to visit some of the loveliest and most rural countryside in our isles.

Romantic things to do in the area:
Watch the sunset go down over the Welsh Mountains from the top of the Whimble. Or walk across Hergest Ridge, both listening to ‘Hergest Ridge’ by Mike Oldfield on your iPods and take a break at the bench under the Monkey Puzzle trees to admire the views. Or have a pint of real ale in the Olde Tavern in Kington. Or walk along the Fairy Path and visit the 30m high waterfall ‘Water-Break-Its-Neck’. Or ride ponies through the Black Mountains. Or have a picnic in a cider orchard. Or take afternoon tea on the veranda at Hergest Croft Gardens. Or paddle a canoe down the river Wye. Or visit the heart-shaped waterfall above Hafod. Or watch the Red Kites soaring above Radnorshire Forest. Or have morning coffee with a beautiful slice of cake at the historic Thomas Shop in Penybont. Or share an adrenaline rush by taking part in extreme sports at the Black Mountain Adventure Centre including zip wires, canyoning and abseiling.

Walking, Cycling, Riding:
The cottage is on the Offa’s Dyke walking path and close to the Wye Valley Walk, Glyndwr’s Walk and Mortimer’s Trail Longmynd, Stipperstones and Wenlock Edge are an easy drive to the Northeast, to the South are the Black Mountains and Brecon Beacons and the West the Radnorshire Forest, Elan Valley, Hafod and Plynlimon. The opportunities for short circular walks to strenuous distances across remote countryside are some of the best in Britain. For mountain biking, there is a fantastic off-road trail through the Elan Valley, enormous numbers of bridleways across the open moorland in the area and hundreds of miles of forest tracks. Bicycle hire can be arranged. We can give you details of riding schools offering pony trekking through the mountains and indoor riding. Stabling can be arranged. The weather conditions are varied across the area, so with a bit of planning one can usually find somewhere good to go every day, even during unsettled weather periods. Great game and carp fishing nearby and shooting.
Make yourself comfortable in this cottage, which features a fireplace. There's a private patio. A kitchen is outfitted with a refrigerator, an oven, and a stovetop. Conveniences include a microwave and a coffee/tea maker.
Take in the views from a garden and make use of amenities such as barbecue grills.
Guests will find features like internet access and onsite parking.

Kington Holiday
We enjoyed our holiday and the really lovely countryside in this part of Herefordshire. Walks and bike rides were wonderful as well as excellent garden visiting. We were a bit disappointed by the cottage. It was not as clean as we expected and was quite cluttered e.g. large paintings stored behind the bedroom door. The internal paintwork needs refreshing and the garden table and sun shade are quite unappealing. For a four star property at the price paid, the standard should have been higher.

Ideal rural location, close to Hergest Ridge
The cottage is ideal for up to 4 people, well equipped and in a quiet location. There is a lot of information for walkers and gardens and NT properties within easy reach to visit. We had a fortnight and never ran short of somewhere different to walk or visit. The only lack is that Kington does not provide many opportunities for eating out.

Hobbit House!
A lovely cottage but small. It had everything that we needed and I could manage the cooker and hob effectively. The bathroom has just had a refurbishment and catered for us well. It is in a lovely position near enough to walk into the town and surrounded by beautiful countryside. Unfortunately the dish washer was not working and the garden table could not be used either as the tiles around the edges were very loose. I also had to scrub all the mugs before use as they were heavily stained. I even had to bleach two of them as the stains were so entrenched. Nevertheless we enjoyed our stay.

Cosy cottage in an excellent location
The location of the cottage was very good, about 10 minutes walking into Kington & handy for the main road. It was warm & comfortable with a well equipped kitchen. The bathroom could do with some updating though the shower was good. Despite the proximity to the main road it was quiet & there was some good walking right from the door - Hergest Ridge & Bradnor Hill. Plenty of places to eat in Kington, Presteigne or Knighton. Stunning scenery round about.

Utterly delightful cottage, could not have been happier with everything. A real home from home.
Everything clean and fresh and lovely, this is the most well-equipped cottage we have ever stayed in, even had thermos flasks and a pizza cutter! Verena could not have been more helpful. Walks literally from your doorstep, we crossed over the road, down a public footpath and walked up to Hergest Croft Gardens. We came with our nearly fifteen year old daughter and had a great time, but perfect for honeymooners, (I would imagine it would be very cosy in winter), small families or two couples. Perfectly positioned for Kington which must be the friendliest town in England! We came without a car, took a train to Hereford, and using the reliable Sergents buses (timetable essential) found it all doable, Went to charming Weobly, Water Break it's Neck Waterfall (ask the driver and he will stop for you) and ventured into Wales. It is worth coming here just to visit the Small Breeds Farm and Owl Centre, again we walked, bit of a trek ,but perfect on a sunny day. Brilliant for All ages! The top garden is enclosed and lovely and more loveliness waits you at the end of the garden??! If you are after peace and quiet, yet want lots to do and a cosy cottage to return to then this is the place for you. Perfect! A million thanks.

Lovely property with everything you will ned for your stay
We found the property entirely clean and with everything in place. Everything is provided to make the stay comfortable. The lack of direct parking was not an issue for us. we had a small issue with a lock which was dealt with promptly and efficiently. A lovely area to stay in. Great road links to the whole area.
