About this property

A farm surrounded by the primeval forest on the goddess island of Miyajima

The farm is located on the island of Miyajima, one of the three most scenic spots in Japan and registered as a UNESCO world cultural heritage site. It is surrounded by a virgin forest on the sunny southeastern slope behind the sacred mountain "Misen", where it is said that the legendary Buddhist monk Kukai, also known as Kobo Daisi, trained in the early Heian period. The farmhouse is a vibrant fusion of Mediterranean atmosphere and classical Japanese interiors, where you would feel lost in wonderland.

As the owner worked as a Japanese-French interpreter in the French-speaking countries in Africa (Algeria, Tunisia, Senegal, Ivory Coast, Mali, Benin, etc.) for a total of more than 20 years and is fluent in both English and French, he thinks visitors from abroad could fully enjoy their stay without feeling any linguistic barriers.
A kitchen is outfitted with a stovetop. The bathroom has a shower/tub combination.
This farm stay offers designated smoking areas.
Guests will find features like internet access.

Housing property is clean. It’s a farm so the bathroom is separate from the main house. The house has a nice kitchen to use and tatami bedroom. There’s a multi purpose room in the basement level but we didn’t use it. The farm wasn’t upkept but the owner said he’s changing the crops. The Bedroom view is beautiful and Sound of crickets/frogs at night loud but peaceful as there’s nothing around…

Kenji picked us up from the ferry terminal and drove us to the farm, stopping to show us the beautiful scenery that lead to the property. He was kind and talkative which made us feel like he was happy to have us stay at his farm. Upon arrival, we were taken aback at the beauty of the farm and the surroundings. The room, the bathroom, the kitchen and tea room were all beautiful with views and charm. It was an incredibly relaxing and peaceful experience to stay there. At the discretion of Kenji’s availability he was able to drive us to town so that we could visit the shrine which was a great way to see both sides of the island. The sea is super close and very swimmable.

Serene Farm Stay
Kenji's farmhouse was one of our favourite stays in Japan. Located on the island of Miyajima, it offered us an amazing view of the Inland Sea from our room, kitchen, and even the bathroom and tub - not to mention the great view of Mt. Misen just behind the property! We also enjoyed seeing many animals, including deer, frogs, and birds of prey, on the island. Despite the rain, we had a relaxing stay surrounded by nature. As for our host, Mr. Kenji, he was a great host! He showed us parts of his farm and a great scenic view of the sea/island on our drive to the farm stay. He was also very kind in offering us freshly picked kinkan (kumquat) and fresh veggies straight from his garden for salad (I was like Heidi on a farm on an island)! Our only mistake was not buying groceries to cook during our stay, as we underestimated our transportation time. However, Mr. Kenji offered to drive and pick us up the next day at the ferry terminal (to explore and eat out) for a very reasonable fee. Overall, I would definitely come back here and probably book more nights to enjoy the island on foot by hiking! M&J

It was great to spend some time in nature relaxing after doing city sightseeing. Kenju was very helpful collecting and delivering us to and from the ferry port. We had a lovely time enjoying the peace & quiet and waking up to a stunning vista of the sea and surrounding islands.

A welcome retreat in paradise
This place is a great getaway from the city hustle. The house overlooks the lovely garden, with a view of the island-dotted sea beyond. Birds and a fast running stream serenaded us throughout the visit. The coarse sand beach with beautiful views is a 15 minute walk from the farm and we were the only people there. We cooked our own meals (bringing our own food and drinks) and Kenji supplied us with abundant fresh produce. The kitchen was fully equipped and we cooked looking out at the sea. Another highlight was bathing in the cedar hot bath while looking out at the stars at night - our own personal night sky onsen! Kenji is a world traveler, intellectual, creative and interested in trying new things. He shared some of his new projects and showed us around the town before we had a goodbye lunch together. Kenji transported us both ways from/to the ferry. We had a lovely stay and felt refreshed. Thank you Kenji!

Extraordinary Stay at Kenji’s Farm
I spent the final night of my 12 day visit to Japan here, and had the most wonderful time. First, you won’t find a more accommodating host than Kenji. He provided excellent communication throughout my stay and carefully walked me through everything about the property upon arrival. His English is excellent. It’s important to know that some preparation is needed to get the most out of your visit. First, as other reviewers mentioned, Kenji provides transportation to and from his farm and the ferry terminal. He graciously offered to bring me back to town the next day on my schedule, but if you are planning to visit the more touristy parts of the island, you should do so before he picks you up at 4pm or after he drops you back off, as there’s no option to return once at the farm. Kenji was exceptionally accommodating in this way, but it’s important to know in advance. Bring food as there’s no way to get it once you are at the property. Kenji shared vegetables from his garden from which I made a salad. You won’t need oil or seasonings, etc. but definitely bring the main ingredients. Finally, the property, which was so atmospheric it’s almost hard to put into words. From the moment we departed to the farm, it truly felt like I was living in a Ghibli movie. Kenji has put thought into everything. The outdoor cedar bath was incredible, as was the kitchen and tatami mat bedroom. There’s Wi-Fi, amenities, decorations, and more. Thank you Kenji, I can’t wait to return!

An incredibly relaxing stay
We loved our time on Kenji's farm, in particular just watching the boats in the bay at night time and listening to the wildlife, especially while having the most amazing bath. Kenji was a fantastic host and made check-in and out super easy for us. Do make sure you bring your own food for dinner and breakfast as we didn't realise just how remote the farm is!

Miyajima Farm
The farmhouse is very nice. Everything you need in the kitchen to cook with. The outdoor bathhouse is one of the best features of this house. We very much enjoyed the peaceful atmosphere soaking in the tub. The farm garden is great. So wonderful to go out and pick fresh greens to go with dinner. It would be helpful to revise the description of the property to alert potential clients of the remoteness of the farm if you have no car; you will need to bring all your own food. We had no idea we were not near town or a grocery store. Since we had no car we had to rely on Kenji for rides back to town. He was very accommodating with the transportation. Overall, a very magical place to stay.

Magical stay on Miyajima with the world’s most wonderful host!
I feel so incredibly lucky to have gotten to stay on this beautiful property and to meet Kenji-san, (a.k.a. Eco-Friendly Ken), who was a fantastic host. This was without a doubt the highlight of our trip to Japan. We arrived at the ferry terminal on Miyajima, where Kenji picked us up and drove us to the other side of the island. We even stopped along the way so he could show us the majesty of the Sento Inland Sea and tell us more about the surrounding area. When we arrived at the property itself, it was absolutely breathtaking. Just above the farm, and a soon-to-be vineyard, lies the guesthouse and bathhouse. The house has a stellar kitchen and the bedroom has a window looking out to the sea. Kenji made sure we knew everything we needed to know about the property, and even took us down to the farm to select fresh vegetables for a salad. (It was the best salad I’ve ever had). The bathhouse is traditional and absolutely charming — unsurprisingly it was also the best bath I’ve ever had. We felt so welcomed and taken care of, it truly felt more like staying at the house of an old friend. We can’t wait to come back when the winery is up and running! If you’ve been lucky enough to stumble on this listing, this is your sign to stay at Kenji-san’s place and experience the untouched beauty of Miyajima.

Kenji-San has a lovely farm that is the perfect mountain side retreat for some quiet and solitude! The Japanese cedar bath is enough reason alone to book! The best bath I’ve ever had! Not only that but Kenji-San was very flexible and accommodating with my arrival and departure. He even offered me vegetables from his farm to go along with the food I had brought. They were so fresh and delicious! This is the perfect place to get away and refresh yourself in the elements. I wish I could’ve stayed longer!

This was by far my favorite vrbo I have stayed in yet! Kenji was the best host, so helpful and kind. We spent our time star gazing, making dinners and soaking in the tub ❤️ the island its self is so mystical and full of rich history. We walked to the closest beach and swam in clear waters watching the fishing boats cruise by. Very peaceful. Couldnt recommended more!! Arigato kenji san!

Refreshing Nature Retreat
Our favorite stay of our entire trip was Kenji’s beautiful farm. It was the most perfect retreat in nature, where you could hear a waterfall, birds, and we even saw monkeys! The farm has all the modern conveniences and interior design. The open air bath was the cherry on top, where you could fully relax in nature. It was so peaceful. Kenji was the perfect host! He picked us up from the ferry terminal and gave us fresh vegetables from the farm. It was great chatting and getting to know him! He put a lot of hard work into the farm and it shows. I could not recommend this stay more highly. We had a perfect time and will definitely be back again. Our only regret was not staying longer. Thanks Kenji!

An escape from the crowd
Kenji has built a lovely house on the top of the hill with a beautiful view on the sea. It lies at 9 km of the city center with no connection by bus. Make sure to shop your food before getting to the island as there are 2 small convenience store on the island. To go to the city, Kenji will drive you (conditions to be defined) otherwise it is a nice 2-hour walk along the coast.

I had a wonderful time staying at Ken’s place and I would highly recommend it to any solo travelers or couples that are planning on staying on Miyajima Island. I stayed two nights at Ken’s place and that was enough time for me to explore around the island. I backpacked and was able to fit my luggage in the lockers at the Miyajima ferry station until it was time for checkin. Because the farm is on the other side of the island in a remote area Ken kindly offered to shuttle me to and from. If you like hiking it is between a 5-6 mile/9km walk from the property to the main area of town on Miyajima (about 2 hours), but the walk is lovely and you get to see the beaches and shrines on the other side of the island. On my second day there Ken graciously offered to shuttle me back at the end of the day after exploring which was nice! Because Ken lives on a farm he showed me what he was growing and even offered me vegetables he grew to make a salad for each of the nights I stayed, which was delicious! The property is isolated and is very relaxing with the sounds of nature. There is also a lovely view of the sea with other islands in the background. Ken has another property so you get the entire house to yourself! You can also tell that Ken has put a great amount of detail into the property, the house feels very traditional and has all of the amenities you would want. Ken said that he was inspired by Miyazaki and during my stay there I felt like I was in one of Miyazaki’s movies.
