The hotel itself was clean, comfortable, and had a lovely rustic atmosphere. The amenities were good, and the staff was very friendly and spoke great English. The private hot spring was easy to book a time slot for, and was very relaxing. The staff prepared a handy map of local restaurants and stores, as well as English menus, but the opening hours on things is very inconsistent since it’s a small mountain town, so despite things being listed as opening at 5, we went for dinner at 5:30 and nothing was open until almost 6:30 aside from the convenience store.
The guest-house was lovely and so were the hosts. We came on a rainy day late in the evening, and they arranged for us to be taken by private car to the most wonderful local and traditional restaurant where we had a delicious tempura meal. The private onsen was a wonderful experience - it was much larger than I expected an had views of the garden. We slept very well and enjoyed the sound of the river and trees. The surrounding area around the guest house is very nice if you want to go for a walk. I highly recommend this property.

Budget 2 star with friendly staff
Staff are really friendly and super helpful.
The place itself is old and as a 2 star shouldn’t expect too much.
Lots of cobwebs everywhere which show it hasn’t been deep cleaned in a long time. I wouldn’t recommend staying here in summer as there will probably be a lot of spiders and bugs. I stayed in winter (December) so we only seen one spider inside the house. There is free green tea and coffee and clean bottled water in the main lounge which is nice. Hot spring is good since it can be reserved for your room privately. The official time is 30 minutes per room but the owners are flexible and allow longer.
This is a great place to stay for visiting museums. The staff was very nice. It is situated next to the forest so waking up to nature felt particularly refreshing.
I especially love the traditional setting of this guest house. A great cultural experience. This is my first time in Japan and first time doing solo travel. I will definitely come back and stay here. You will get addicted to the onsen too! 😊
The checkin process took over 40 mins. Onsen hours are 4:00pm to 11:00pm. You’ll need to schedule your private onsen, 30 minutes sessions. Very quiet & traditional Japanese style. Short walk to restaurants and seven eleven types stores.
Host was exceptionally friendly and helpful. Provided great suggestions for restaurants. It was great that they'd booked off private onsen time for guests!
Our one-night stay at Fuji-Hakone Guest House was an interesting experience. It's an old Japanese style inn with very small but well designed rooms. The tatami floors and sliding shoji doors were charming, as were the futon beds on the floors. Our room had an incredible view of the river and the sounds of the water were so soothing. The futon beds were a bit hard but the quilts were heavenly. There are no bathrooms in the rooms. The two stall bathrooms are shared (one for females and one for males) but I didn't see anyone when I went in to use them. The shower is in the public onsen bath area but you are able to sign up for a private bath time so it's not a problem. The outdoor onsen bath is also available for private use but it costs 500 yen per person for 30 minutes. It's worth is as it is a lovely setting. They do serve a buffet breakfast for a small addtional fee, but no other meals are served. There are a few restaurants in the area and a Lawson's a few minutes walk away. There is a kitchen for guests to use with a fridge, sink, microwave, and dishware. You can pay to use the gas cooker. They serve green tea in the dining area and have information available on all kinds of things: hiking, bus schedules, area restaurants, you name it. We were backpacking through the area and it was a great one-night stay but the room was a little small for any longer than that. They were kind enough to hold our packs for the day while we went hiking.
I had a wonderful stay at this cozy ryokan. Japanese style rooms with modern comforts. The management was very well prepared to answer any questions and help with making plans.
Booked the guesthouse while we were riding the train going to Hakone and for a spur of the moment trip, it was really good. Stayed in a traditional style Japanese house/room with straw floors and futons (the comforters were heaven!), and it was very clean and comfortable, and just a stone's throw from the bus stop and the Little Prince's Museum. It had the basic amenities (if you don't mind sharing toilets) but bring your own toiletries. We were also able to use the indoor onset giving that authentic Japanese feel. The family hosts were also very friendly and accommodating giving us good tips on where to explore around the area. Served us nice breakfast too.
Only downside we can think of is that the area closes early (around 6pm) as it gets pretty dark in the mountains so be prepared walking on the streets at night.
Extremely comfortable futon pad. Traditional tatami mats and in-room heater/air conditioning. Private indoor and outdoor onsen was a major plus over other accommodations. The family that runs the place was so helpful and welcoming. I would definitely recommend this place to a friend.

Disappointing & expensive for what it is...
This is more like a backpackers than a ryokan. Loud visitors, children running through the halls at all hours. The indoor onsen are old and tired and were almost fully booked when we arrived. Outdoor onsen has an additional charge and was also almost fully booked. The breakfast was terrible. Sugared cereals with plain white bread and a hard boiled egg, with no Asian options and should not have been an additional charge considering what was on offer. This is a place purely for tourists, there is no essence of authenticity. Search for something nicer!
