What a beautiful place to spend a week! Leaving the town of Dolores, you travel up the canyon wall, through the San Juan forest, and open up to amazing mountain and meadow views. Full meadows of yellow flowers, and birds, deer, elk, ground hogs, chipmunks... even the angus cows with their calves we found endearing to see grazing or walking across the roads. The last 11 miles are unpaved, and a bit rough on our little Corolla, but no regrets. The cabin is near enough to the lodge and other cabin to see through the trees, but we never heard the other guests unless we walked by their places. SO quiet! The cabin looked just as charming as the photos, and had everything we needed in terms of dishes, appliances, linens & towels, and other convenient items. When we arrived, the windows were open and the place was nicely cooled, and there was a nice note welcoming us, as well as some local dried beans and honey. Tanya, the host, and her 3 dogs made us feel most welcome! She was very friendly, helpful, and just a joy to be around. There is a small but useful store at the lake nearby for some grocery items or liquor. We met a friendly cabin owner (Thanks, D.!)who took us up the mountain where our car wouldn't have gone, for some gorgeous mountain views. No TV, no wifi... when we weren't off to Durango, we enjoyed hiking around in the aspens, playing games, reading in the rocking chair on the front porch, birding, and watching the deer who came very near to the cabin. Great area for birders! This really is the place to get away.
