Hotels in Chiang Mai
Chiang Mai may not be the largest city in Thailand, but it is a popular destination with a significant expatriate population. Chiang Mai was once the ancient capital of the Lanna kingdom, and there are many historical temples like Wat Chedi Luang, Wat Chiang Man and Wat Phra Singh located there.
Key facts
The majority of visitors arrive in the city at the Chiang Mai International Airport (CNX). You can also take a bus or train from Bangkok, which takes around 12 hours. While there are some metered taxis available, you can also take advantage of the motorized rickshaws called tuk-tuks to get around. Covered trucks with bench seating serve as buses and ply regular routes throughout the city.
Hints and tips
Situated in the northern part of the country, the city enjoys a more temperate climate than regions farther south that can get humid during the hot season. This walled city is famous for its weekend night markets and unique dishes like spicy khao soi, a curry-based soup with chicken. If you are in Chiang Mai in mid-April, be prepared for the Songkran festival. This is the Buddhist New Year celebration in Thailand, and it is celebrated by dousing people in water to wash away mistakes from the previous year.
