Flights to Bangkok
Flights to Bangkok generally land at the New Bangkok International Airport (the Suvarnabhumi Airport), just outside the city. You may also fly into the "Old" Bangkok International Airport, also known as the Don Mueang International Airport. The great majority of international Bangkok flights now go through the Suvarnabhumi airport. Airlines represented include Bangkok Airways, Delta, Qantas, and United. There is WLAN Wi-Fi service in hotspots throughout the airport, and duty free shops provide the opportunity to cheaply bring gifts home to friends and loved ones. If you have some time, stop for dinner at one of the many restaurants throughout the concourse. Then get into your hotel or Bangkok proper by Airport rail lines, city bus, or limousine service.
Bangkok Weather
Your flights to Bangkok take you to a South Asian city that lies at the center of the Mae Nam Chao Phraya delta: as hot as Khartoum and as wet as Guatemala City! Between May and July the monsoons arrive. These rains last into November, and is followed by a dry period with lower temperatures. The rains come mostly during August and September, with the heat. Take an umbrella, but a raincoat will just make you miserable. Weather in Bangkok can be temperamental, and changes can be expected. The wise planner comes prepared for almost anything.
Getting Around Bangkok
Bangkok is known for an excellent public transportation system, with inexpensive sky trains and an underground system to get you almost anywhere in the city. If you'd rather take the water route, boats will carry you over the canals, and the bus system can't be beaten, although it could be more comfortable! Taxis are brightly lit, and some of the best (and cleanest) in the world. Sometimes during rush hour a driver will refuse to go to certain areas, but that is easily remedied: find another cab, or take a motorcycle taxi. If you choose the latter, though, be prepared for anything from a cautious ride to a whirlwind of excitement as you sail through the streets.
Bangkok Attractions
Bangkok. Bright lights, nightlife, history. Everything you've heard and more! Take some time to explore the historic capital of Siam, now Thailand, and see what you've been missing. Get started with these not-to-be-missed locations:
- Wat Rachabophit, charmingly quaint temple, not so touristy as others, with interesting architectural features.
- Grand Palace, so huge it will take you at least half a day to see all of it, including its temple, Wat Phra Khew.
- Lumphini Park, the largest park to be found in central Bangkok.
- Lumpinee Boxing Stadium, see Muay Thai, or Thai boxing, both a sport and a self-defense technique.
- Queen Saovabha Institute Snake Farm, with many snakes and an informative program about the risks and care of these reptiles.
