The cottage is designed in the old Icelandic country style, but with house heating, hot water, well equipped modern kitchen with a dish washer. The ground floor is 35 (square m.) Upstairs there is a 20 square m. sleeping attic with one Queen Size bed (140x200 cm).
The backyard consists og thousands of acres of unspoiled nature as Kolsstaðir is located in a remote & secluded natural setting in the mountains of west Iceland. Part of the year, depending on the season, you have animals as neighbours such as sheep (June-October), sometimes horses and occasionally the arctic fox (hard to spot).
Kolsstaðir is Ideal for hiking, meditating, outdoor- and artistic activities as well as observing the Northern lights when they are visible (October-April). Hiking trails can be found just steps away from the cottage as well as sheep trails that head in all directions for your private encounter. The views are broad; out to the ocean, towards the surrounding mountains and into the valleys.
But it takes only around 15 minutes to drive to Buðardalur, a small village where you can shop most necessities at the grocery store, pharmacy and liquor store, find some local restaurants and a handicraft store.
At Laugar, Sælingsdal (30 km/20 mi) you'll find a natural pool (tub), open 24h, free of charge. (see photos). There is also a geothermal swimming pool with a hot tub around the corner from the natural pool hours vary depending on the season.
The cottage is designed in the old Icelandic country style, but with a modern wood stove and a well equipped modern kitchen. The ground floor 30 (square m.) is a single space with a sleeping sofa. Upstairs there is a 20 square m. sleeping attic with 2 beds. (One Queen Size and one single).
Please do not arrive before 16:00. (4:00 p.m.) without asking as we often need the time between 11 and 3 to prepare the house. Check out is 11:00.
A 4WD vehicle is necessary to get to Kolsstaðir during the winter. There is a gravel road from the main road up the hill to the cottage. It is cleared of snow on a regular basis with help from the neighboring farmer but it happens during the winter that you have to you leave your car at the bottom of the hill and bring your luggage up with you in case of your vehicle being snowed in. Driving in Iceland during the winter requires a 4wd. as well as studded tires. (From november - april).
We recommend a visit to the nearby fjords for bird watching and occasional seal. A tour around Snæfellsnes peninsula, to the westfjords as well as west Iceland inland valleys like the Langjokull glacier, Husafell, Krauma spa and Hraunfossar/barnafoss waterfalls.
Some sightseeing can be done when driving to or from Kolsstaðir from Reykjavik. Good Paved roads are most of the way. (Road 1) 3km (2 miles) of gravel road takes you the rest of the way to Kolsstaðir. Consider driving Whalefjord instead of taking the tunnel for a more scenic drive (45 min longer drive). (Only summer!).
Kolsstaðir is within 2 hour drive from Reykjavik. Kolsstaðir is designed in old Icelandic cottage style. It is 30 square meters in size with a 20 square meter sleeping attic including a double bed and a single bed. Downstairs there is a sleeping sofa, a modern fire stove (you can buy firewood at the cottage, most gas stations and hardware stores) and a well equipped kitchen. There is a strong WIFI Internet connection. The bathroom has a shower. Towels, shampoo and soap is provided.
I do not live in the area, but I am available online or by phone if necessary.
The backyard consists og thousands of acres of unspoiled nature as Kolsstaðir is located in a remote and secluded natural setting in the mountains of west Iceland. In the summer when arriving from Keflavik/Reykjavik, consider taking the higland Road through Kaldidalur from Thingvellir to Husafell, visiting the magnificent Hraunfossar waterfall and then drive to Kolsstadir.
When arriving at the Inernational airport in Keflavik you might consider doing the Blue lagoon on your way as it is relatively near to the airport. You usually have to book before hand online as it is very popular. You can drive to Kolsstaðir in a street car during summer. For winter driving in Iceland you should rent a 4wd from nov. - apr. or at least car with studded tires. It can happen during the winter that the drive way gets blocked with snow. But it's cleaned on a regular basis.
It's a short distance up to the mountain of Kolsstaðir (Kolsstaðafjall) where there is a view to all directions. Forget Bucket lists for a while, observe the stones in your path, the flower by the roadside and the mountains embracing you...
