About this property

Remote, family, pet friendly, stunning views, log burner, walks from the door.

Cae Canol is a Grade II* listed stone farmhouse, full of rustic charm, built 500 years ago on the slopes of Manod Mawr mountain. Overlooking the Teigl Valley, this remote property is accessed along half a mile of gated trackway through rolling farmland with grazing sheep. A seriously away from it all location for country lovers who want to walk into the hills and just lose themselves in the myriad of footpaths and discover 'Wild Wales'. Cae Canol is a beautiful example of a traditional Snowdonia House, with the spacious open Hall living area, heated by a gable-end ingelnook fireplace, reaching the full height of the house with the impressive exposed beams visible the length of the high vaulted roof. From the living area, slate slab stairs embedded in the original walls take you to a large galleried mezzanine bedroom with sitting area and fireplace, with a balcony overlooking the lounge below. Traditional style fitted kitchen and bathroom with bath and shower are located downstairs adjacent to the twin bedroom off the low beamed entrance hall. Attached to the Farmhouse is Cae Canol Cottage, a beautifully converted bake house, also available for rent.
Magnificent unspoiled views of Snowdonia National Park greet you at the door, and the outdoor seating area is perfect for views stretching down the valley towards Porthmadog and Llyn Peninsula beyond.

Exploring the local area:
You can set off straight from the farmhouse on numerous paths across the valleys and surrounding hills. Explore the ancient footpaths to Cwm Penmachno and the Crimea pass, and wander the paths around Manod Quarries - famous as the home to the National Galleries hidden art treasures during the second world war. Local lake and river fishing can be arranged with permits available through Cambrian Angling.

Places to visit:
2 miles away is the village of Llan Ffestiniog with local convenience store, and Y Pengwern community pub serving real ale and great food. For a timeless steam train experience, you can start you journey on the Ffestiniog and Welsh Highland railways from Blaenau Ffestiniog (5 miles) where you will also find food outlets, supermarkets and takeaways.
For thrill seekers, Zip World: Titan, Bounce Below underground trampoline nets, and Antur Stiniog mountain biking are all in easy reach.
A short drive away is the harbour town of Porthmadog and the beautiful village of Borth Y Gest with sandy coves ,where you can start your walk along the coastal path with views over the estuary towards Portmeirion (11 miles). Black Rock Sands (13 miles) allows you to drive straight on to the 3 miles of sand and dunes and if you can tempt yourself further afield, then visit Harlech Castle (14 miles), Swallow Falls and Betws y Coed (15 miles) in the Conwy valley, Coed y Brenin mountain bike centre (16 miles) and Llanberis at the foot of Snowdon (30 miles).

Fantastic location
Beautiful cottages, we stayed in the farmhouse with a small cottage attached. Not obvious from the picture. But we had the place to ourselves. Truly wonderful

Remote
As listed, getting to this property was an undertaking. If you intend to relax and enjoy solitude and epic scenery, then this is the place for you. If you intend to use it as a base for exploring Snowdonia and northern Wales (as was our intent), then you may find the remoteness a hindrance. The large lounge was great, the kitchen had everything we needed, and the bathroom was nice. The utility room and laundry facilities were excellent. Our only request would be to level the bed; given the slanted floor, one person rolls on the other all night. We would happily return.

Amazing farmhouse, amazing location
We couldn't believe our luck when arriving at the farmhouse, the location was idyllic. The farmhouse itself was well kitted out and we had everything we needed. The only downside of the farmhouse is our 6'4" son struggled with the low doorways. Although the gates were a bit of a chore, it was obvious with the number of sheep around why it was so important and just added to the character of the place. We thoroughly enjoyed our week at Cae Canol, especially with such good weather, and would recommend it to anyone wanting to get away from it all.

Amazing cosy cottage
What an absolute gem of a cottage. The remoteness might not be for everyone but our party of 5 (ages 69, 68, 41, 12 & 8) loved the peace and quiet of this beautiful property. We managed to access the cottage in a VW Tiguan, anything bigger would have been a struggle. The property had everything you could possibly think of, with walks from the doorstep and views to die for. We enjoyed exploring the locality, and would not hesitate to book again. Host Caroline was on the other end of the phone anything (including restaurant recommendations!) and was fantastic and welcoming. If you love peace, quiet, cosiness, a well equipped property, excellent views and a warm welcome then this is the place for you. Thank you so much Caroline for letting us stay in your cottage.

Mesmerising View
It was great escape & lovely stay. Great location with mesmerising views. There are few nice trails available in the area. The house is very authentic with its special atmosphere. It was hard to find property but definitely worth of effort (after you reach white cottage you’ll need to open 6 gates to get to the place). Thanks you, Caroline it was a great time!!!

Absolutely perfect, away from everything
Communication with Caroline, the owner, was great. A couple of days before we left we recieved lots of info and directions on how to get to the property... They looked very complicated but we followed them and used the Google maps coordinates which got us to the front door. Farmhouse was perfect, like stepping back in time but with all the mod cons we are all used to. The location is out of this world, even though the weather was wet and wild we just couldn't shut the front door on the most amazing scenery. We have an elderly dog with arthritis and wasn't sure how she would get on but she loved it... If you are looking for somewhere remote to stay, literally miles from anyone or anywhere then do not hesitate to book. Will absolutely return.

Great communication and advice from Caroline. Property is not the easiest to access but thoroughly worth the effort. It is without doubt the most beautiful, remote and peaceful property we have stayed in. A true part of history, amazing walks from the door, wide expanse of stunning views and true calm. Feel fully recharged and relaxed.

A wonderful escape
It was quite difficult to find the property, you are lead to a road which is signposted as a no-through road, once you get the the cattle grid, there is no indication which way you should go and again when needing to turn down to go past the white house there is no indication that that's the way you need to go - some signage would be helpful as reassurance you're going the correct way. The views from the property were stunning and definitely a highlight for our stay. Unfortunately the shared freezer was full of food (assuming from previous guests) and needed to be defrosted/cleared out. Didn't feel overly comfortable using the shared facilities, particularly under current COVID situation. Would definitely recommend this place to people who are wanting to escape it all, we enjoyed our stay. Would also highlight it is definitely worth climbing the hill/mountain behind the house as there is a stunning lake there and even more amazing views.

A lovely stay
Such a lovely stay with some friends after the lockdown. The perfect quiet get away. The cottage was very sweet and had everything we need. We were able to cook meals their and didn’t get bored with some games and the fire. We also slept very well! The little track to get up was well worth the stunning views around the cottage. Like something you’d see in a movie! Plenty of walks around and snowdon close by! We hope to visit wales again soon and hope this place is available too. (Next door cottage was also rented out by our friends and that was also lovely!) Thanks Caroline, great host.

Magical place
Stayed at Cae Canol for a week, family with two children of 12 and 10. The house is very comfortable and full of character. Truly away from it all, but the views and sounds so far from everything are so good for soul and wellness. We did not have any issues with finding the house as Caroline the owner left clear instructions and also checked if we were ok a few times during our stay. Oh, and she even left us some treats as a welcome gift! Thank you Caroline for such a wonderful week and I really hope to come back one day x
