Really friendly check in - quick and simple. When we arrived the car park was full but there is unrestricted parking on the street outside.
We stayed in suite 303 which was next to the car park and close to the outside drinking area. The bathroom was on the ground floor with a set of steep(ish) stairs to the bedroom. Floor height varied by a few inches and it took us a few trips (literally) before we got used to the bump in the floor where it's carpeted over the beams. Whilst this amused us as to how clumsy we were, as this is at the top of the stairs, this could be a bit of a hazard. The room came with a Nespresso machine along with a complimentary half bottle of wine, crisps and chocolate raisins.
It might have been handy to have a night light as one switch does both upstairs and downstairs lights. This meant we had to leave the bathroom mirror light on to get up and down the stairs safely at night.
The bar area is clean and bright with plenty of tables and a typical beer choice. The staff were really friendly and helpful.
Our main issue was with noise. The venue is used for weddings with a chapel at the rear of the car park and we had groups of people in the early hours that prevented us from sleeping until after 2am. This was followed at 5.20am with staff talking and moving furniture in the drinking area and then by guests dragging their suitcases through the gravel car park from 7am. So a far from perfect night's sleep.
Check out was quick - there was no-one on reception
We had room 12 which was a little hot and stuffy. The overhead shower is broken. In need of refurbishment and some deep cleaning. As always, decent breakfast and the petite blonde lady was friendly and helpful. We always enjoy staying in Amersham. Hotel was busy.
Very last minute so got there very late, odd layout as so old I guess, drinks and fridge as you walk in and bathroom opposite, then up 7 very creeky steps to bedroom. Glad we got there late as room is literally next to outdoor drinking area and I heard, people outside chatting next morning (room 301).
Bed was awful and you move when person next to you moves
All staff exceptionally friendly warm and helpful
Sons cooked breakfast looked plentiful and lovely presented.
So i stay at this hotel on and off for business and overal its a bit quirky but generally good.
The goods: room a reasonable size, shower and bathroom good, bed comfortable, windows dont fit their frames ( avoid during winter) and they make up room everyday and refil the boarders biscuits... super important!
Bads: twice now i have not been able to have dinner there because the fairly small resteraunt has an event or traing going on even though ive booked it in sdvance. Thats annoying. The food this week was really good, but it can be the opposite. It seems a bit random but if anything its getting better as is my review. Food can often take quite a while also.
Breakfast is also good. Just emphasise the " on toast" for anything you expect to be on toast... because it wont necessarily be if you dont.
Also just be aware that they are in the process of renovating the place although to be fair i have only seen the notice and the new furnishings but no work or disturbance.
overall its fine for a short break ( in the warm months)
Fabulous stay. Well located in pretty Old Amersham high street. Lovely cosy lounge and bar areas. The rooms are comfortable, exceptionally clean and well appointed and even the smallest rooms are a very spacious. Great breakfast too, with lots of excellent cooked options.
What makes this place really special though is the staff, who are amazing. Friendly, cheerful, very helpful and nothing is too much trouble. Very highly recommended.
All good in a Heritage Large room, This room, above the main pub and restaurant, was better than the Junior Suite we had on a previous stay, which turned out to be duplex.
Many hot choices at Breakfast.
The room was a little tired in places, but this is a period property with lots of character. The staff were friendly and helpful, and the full English breakfast was excellent.
So this hotel/ pub is old and quirky not just in design but how its run. The windows dont fit the frames so if you are reading this near winter i would rule this one out. Its gonna get cold. Its got beams, lots of beams. Tall people like myself will need to duck in places. The rooms are generally really nice. The shower was excellent. The bed a little soft for me but probably right for most and the overall size of the room is fairly good. The thing to be mindful of is the dining. If they have a do you wont be able to eat there. If they are slightly busy.. you wont be able to eat there.. if breakfast is taken up by most of the residents then... you can eat there but will have to wait in the reception area. The food is also quite variable once you do get to eat it. I had a Cesar salad and ive never had so much parmesan in my life. Then the next night a pie and the top disintegrated into dust as soon as it was disturbed. Breakfast is quirky too, want srambled egg on toast... na, you just get the scrabbled egg the rest is up to you to do. And be aware if you order a full english the bacons been sitting around a very long time forming the base of any good work shoe. So overall its adequate if you need a local place to stay but not ideal
