About Daytona 500
The Daytona 500 is one of NASCAR's biggest races, both in terms of distance and fan excitement. The 500-mile race consisting of 200 laps takes place in Daytona Beach, Florida once a year as part of the two-race Sprint Cup. Couple with the Coke Zero 400, the Daytona 500 is an instrumental race in launching Nascar racers to fame and fortune.
History
The first Daytona 500 was held as a celebration of the track's opening in 1959, and since then it has gone on to become widely considered to be the most respected and prestigious race in all of NASCAR. Some big moments in Daytona 500 history are when Mario Andretti became one of two drivers in the history of motorsports to win the Daytona 500 and the Indianapolis 500 and whose career wins came only in Nascar’s biggest races. In 1974, the Daytona 500 was actually a 450-mile race but kept the same name. With the U.S. in an energy crisis at the time, Nascar did their piece by saving fuel and cutting the race down by 10 percent. In 1960, Junior Johnson became the first racer to use the draft. What’s that(?), you’re probably thinking. The “draft” was noticed when Johnson was set to race in the 500 with a car that was significantly slower than that of his competitors. He noticed the “draft” when he was riding close to the back bumper of another car. What he saw was that the vehicle in front of him was pulling him along like a vacuum and breaking the wind resistance. He used his newfound strategy to win the 1960 race. With so many incredible moments it’s hard to choose, but we can’t forget to mention Richard Petty, since he holds the record for most wins (7) in the Daytona 500.
There are so many monumental moments from this race over the years, that we cannot possibly list them all. Who knows, maybe the race you attend could turn out to be one that is remembered for years to come!
The Race
The unique placement of the race in the season (unlike most championship events in other sports, the Daytona 500 opens each season of NASCAR rather than closing it) allows months of anticipation and buildup as racing fans wait out the long race-less dark until the Daytona 500 brings about the new dawn of racing.
For NASCAR fans, the Daytona 500 is the Super Bowl. It draws 150,000 fans, as well as live and countless others on television every single year. Don't miss your chance to catch this race in February at the Daytona International Speedway before it speeds by. Buy your cheap Daytona 500 tickets today!
